How to Feel Good in Front of the Camera
Three simple posing tips that make a big difference
By Brooke, BLJ Photography LLC
Let’s be honest—most people don’t walk into a photo session feeling like a model. And that’s okay. My job isn’t to make you look like someone else. It’s to help you feel like the best version of yourself—confident, relaxed, and totally you.
Over the years, I’ve found that a few small adjustments can completely change how someone feels in front of the camera. These aren’t stiff rules or complicated techniques. They’re gentle shifts that help you look polished and natural, without losing your personality.
Here are three of my go-to posing cues, with real before-and-after examples to show how they work.
1. Project Your Chin (Just a Little)
This one’s subtle but powerful. When you gently push your chin forward—without lifting it—you create definition in your jawline and elongate your neck. It adds presence and polish without feeling stiff.
What I’ll usually say during your session:
“Chin toward me just a touch—like a turtle!"
Why it works:
It avoids the tucked chin look that can flatten your features and instead brings a sense of openness and confidence.
2. Bend the Knee Closest to the Camera
This is a game-changer for full-body shots. When you bend the leg closest to the lens, it naturally shifts your weight and creates shape through your hips and torso. It adds movement and avoids that straight-on, boxy stance.
You’ll probably hear me say:
“Shift your weight to your back leg and let that front knee bend.”
Why it works:
It introduces angles and flow, which are way more flattering than standing stiff and square.
3. Bring Your Arm Away From Your Body
Arms pressed flat can make anyone feel awkward. By creating a little space—whether it’s a hand on your hip, in a pocket, or resting gently—you slim your arm and add intention to the pose.
I’ll guide you with something like:
“Bring your arm away from your body just a little.”
Why it works:
It opens up the pose, adds shape, and helps you look relaxed and confident.
